Serbian history in pictures

What you can expect on the tour...

The “Serbian History in Pictures” tour takes you through the key moments of the Serbian past, told through the artworks of the National Museum in Belgrade . The starting point is Republic Square , the former Theater Square, a symbol of the urban and political formation of modern Serbia, where the story opens at the monument to Prince Mihailo Obrenović .

Upon entering the National Museum, the historical narrative begins with a portrait of Dositej Obradović , the first minister of education at the time of the First Serbian Uprising, whose figure symbolizes the idea of knowledge, enlightenment and modernization of society. Through the portraits of Prince Miloš Obrenović , Prince Mihailo and King Milan Obrenović , we follow the process of creating a state — from the struggle for autonomy, through the consolidation of power, to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Serbia.

A special part of the tour is dedicated to monumental historical scenes that shape the collective memory: from the heroic Death of Hajduk Veljko in the painting by Steve Todorović, through the dark and symbolic Watchtower by Đura Jakšić, to the depiction of the death of Karađorđ Petrović , which opens up questions of internal conflicts and the political reality of the revolution.

The end of the tour is marked by the image of the Coronation of Emperor Dušan , a visual symbol of medieval state power and the idea of the “golden age”, which still strongly shapes historical awareness and national identity today.

This tour offers a unique combination of art and history , revealing how paintings became one of the key media through which Serbia remembered, interpreted and imagined its past.
